Editorial Services

Editing provides an opportunity for writers and communicators to sharpen their language and elevate the impact of their work. As a professional Editor, I’m passionate about my job and hold myself to high standards of accuracy, honesty, and fairness. I love spending time with writers and helping turn their original pieces into exceptional finished products while maintaining their unique voice and style.

I know it can be daunting to take that written material to the next step (especially for us introverts!) but don't be shy! All of the best published works had an editor. But what kind of editor are you in need of?

As your editor, I would love to work with you on any level of editing your manuscript or writing project needs:  story level (developmental and content), paragraph/sentence level (copy), or word-by-word level (proofreading).

Proofreading

I will take a meticulous look at your writing project at the word-by-word level. Often, a spelling or grammar error falls through the cracks and is left in the final product due to the same person (whether it be the author, or a copy or developmental editor) reading the same project over and over again. I will be your final pair of eyes, ensuring the final quality check makes your writing project complete and ready for publishing.

If your book has already been professionally edited and formatted, you're ready for that final quality check before publication.

I will focus on:

  • Spelling, punctuation, grammar

  • Consistency in capitalization and hyphenation

  • Accuracy of running heads (headers and footers)

  • End-of-line hyphenation

  • Widows/orphans and short line

  • Table Of Contents & pagination

You will receive:

  • The edited file with track changes

  • A clean copy (all changes pre-accepted)

  • A basic style sheet if you do not already have one

The style sheet includes all of the style decisions, referencing the Chicago Manual of Style, on hyphenation, capitalization, abbreviations, and numbering, along with details about the main characters, locations, and plot points. This keeps everything consistent across the whole project. This is also valuable if you're writing a book series and want to keep track of details across multiple books.

Investment: The cost will vary per project because every project is different. Once I see a sample of your writing, I can provide a detailed proposal tailored to your needs.

Copy/Line Editing

I will provide a thorough look at your writing project at the sentence level. This service is perfect for indie authors who have already worked with a developmental editor and/or line editor (or done many rounds of self-editing and worked with beta readers) and are now happy with the structure of the book. This is also great for all lengths of fiction stories, blog posts, articles, documents, text, etc. Let me take care of the technical details and make sure everything is consistent so readers stay happily immersed in your writing.

I will focus on:

  • Spelling, punctuation, grammar

  • Consistency in capitalization and hyphenation

  • Word usage and other mechanics of style

  • Consistency in abbreviations, numbers, and names

  • Flagging any continuity errors

  • Overall clarity, consistency, and correctness

  • Note any POV issues

  • Offer suggestions for removing or condensing filler words or stage directions

  • Check dialogue formatting and tagging & solid action beats

  • Sentence length and rhythm

Structural/Developmental Editing

This is big picture editing. It means taking a holistic approach to text, a document, or (most commonly) a book manuscript, and looking at the project as a whole. This service is especially important for identifying plot holes, poor characterization, and problems with the setting in works of fiction. This editing is done before a manuscript is pitched to an agent or publisher— and oftentimes before copy/line editing and proofreading.

I will focus on:

  • Identifying Plot holes

  • Characterization

  • Problems with Settings

You will receive, in the form of an Editorial Report:

  • Feedback and ideas on where the story, flow, language, and settings can be strengthened

  • Feedback on if I find any plot holes, any areas that may cause the reader confusion, any issues with dialogue, and how they can be strengthened

  • Provide tips for how to enhance language

  • Provide tips for structure and flow, ensuring consistency

The editorial report goes into detail about your overall strengths and areas to improve in relation to: narrative, point of view, dialogue, showing vs. telling, and more. It's a comprehensive learning tool to help you develop your writing craft.

Investment: The cost will vary per project because every project is different. Once I see a sample of your writing, I can provide a detailed proposal tailored to your needs.

Happy Clients

John Batinovich, CA

“I reached out to Miranda for help proofreading one of my college essays, and she was so helpful that now I go to her with all of my papers. She catches things I haven't noticed even after I've read my paper three times. Miranda is incredibly dependable, always getting back to me with plenty of time to go over everything before my paper is due. Miranda's the best!"

Brenda Morris, RI

"As an author, my biggest pet peeve is editing- and Miranda has made everything so much easier! With her help I have had short stories published in countless anthologies, and she is my go-to editor for every story I finish. I can trust her to give honest feedback and help me make my story the best it can possibly be. I could not do this without her or her style sheets. Thank you, Miranda!"
